The remainder of the spots had been active from two to five years before their discovery; The ability of .the disease to spread rapidly on occasional favorable years, as it did in 1956, indicates its potential seriousness in Virginia. We know that in Wisconsin, for instance, where the disease was first recognized in 1942 and where it had been active for probably 40 years, that the disease is so widespread that control operations have been abandoned. Investigators in that state have reported that in four counties where damage is particularly severe, almost 4% percent of the oak type forest is killed in a 7 to 10 year period.
