In the writing or telling of any experience you may have had during your life, you will always find someone who has had the same to happen to them, or somewhat similar experience, so in the following lines I know several of the “Old Mountain Boys” who after reading this will recall experiences they have had while working or tramping in the woods, s o m ewhat similar or maybe even closer shaves than mine.

About thirty-five years ago or several years before there was talk of a National Park and Skyline Drive, I was on a ginsing hunt back in the ridge and while standing still, and looking for this plant, and having covered most of the ground with my eyes for several yards in all directions glancing in close to where I stood I found myself standing astride of a large timber rattler.

Well, in about half a second, I was six feet from this snake, and why this snake did not strike me,' I do not know, as he was laying directly between my feet, and they being only ten inches apart.
