On several different times, I have spent several days and nights in the woods by myself, and snakes were the least of my worries, and I was in snake country too.
About the last of September or first of October the rattler gets ready for the coming winter months and large numbers gather in large piles, close to where they are going to den up, and it is at this period when they mate.
A Mr. Cornell once told me that he ran across a pile of these snakes once and the pile was as large as a bushel basket and that he killed twenty some with a stick.and at least that many got away.
I think the reason.most people are afraid of snakes, is because they no not know one from tjhe other. My father who lived' to be nearly ninety years of age. and on a farm all his life, couldn’t tell the difference between the coperhead. meadow and spearhead moccasin to him they were all copperheads. '
Both the meadow and spearhead are harmless.
