Seeking his fourth straight victory over timber this season and a second triumph in the local timber classic, Alfred H. Smith’s Grand Chal heads a field of nine named for the 34th running of the Virginia Gold Cup. One of six diverisfied races on this coming Saturday afternoon’s program, the famous timber race is contested over four miles and 22 fences. Post time for the first event is set for 2:30 (EST), with the gates opening before noon to accomodate early arrivals at Broadview, William E. Schulsemeyer’s estate in Warrenton where the annual race meeting is held. ^.^ A-winner of seven of his 15. starts last year, Grand Chal was acclaimed the timber racing champion of 1958 and received the United Hunts Racing Association’s annual $1,000 divisional award. Making a clean sweep of the Old Dominion’s sanctioned timber races rhls season, the ’chaser from Upper Marlboro, Md. has accounted for the Deep Rim Hunt Cup at Richmond and the Middleburg Hunt Cup at Middleburg. Preceding these efforts he won the Carolina Cup at Camden, S, C.
