^ Band Members Visit State
" College
Tuesday, April 7, 1959, eight members of the George Washington Carver High School Band, who passed auditions in Merrifidd, Virginia, March 14, 1959, journeyed to Virginia State College to participate in the All-State Band Festival.
The7 All-State Band was composed of 138 members representing 19 different schools throughout the state of Virginia. Carver members of the All-State Band, who received honors were: Erward Gordon and Clifton TaliferrO, tenor saxaphones; Anthony Wright, first chair, second trumpet Randlophi Howard, third chair, first F hom; Joseph Williams, first chair, first trombone; Herbert Shanks, second , chair, second trombone; Charles Ferguson, bass hom; ahd John Hunter, second chair, snare drummer. All were given certificates for participating.
The guest conductor, Dr. A. G. Wright, of Perdue University, in Bloomington, Indiana, one of the nations top band directors, praised the band for its overall musicianship and excellent playing. Dr. Wright worked diligently all day to have the band ready for the concert that night. The concert was an excellent success..
The program was made up of seven numbers. They were: Sea Portrait, LaGassey; Elsa’s Procession, Wagner-Rcmick; Two Italian Miniaturess, ’Monteverdi Respeghi'; Beguine For Band, Osstr; Marcho Poco,. Moore Americans We, Fillmore; and Roman Carnival, Berlioz-Safranek.
