Since Rappahannock was declared under Area Brucellosis (Bang’s disease) test all but 1 of her cow herds have beer tested at least once. During 1958 an estimated 84% of our heifer population was Bang’s vaccinated. At the last cencus Rappahannock farmers were producing but seventy odd calves for every 100 cows kept. This is extremely low and raises the production per calf terrificly. The Bang’s disease control program should tend to lower this cost.
Steer-wise little change has taken place in Rappahannock during the tenure of your county agent. Two feeders have marketed their fat cattle, iduding some heifers, at the graded fat cattle sale held during winter and early spring months at Fredericksburg. Generally speaking points to consider in the steer game are: (l)use of stilbestrol implants in yearlings just prior to turning on grass; (2) administering tranquilizers just prior to shipment and (3) feeding out to lighter weights which will likely mean more feeding of grain on grass.
