Tuesday voters throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia go to the polls to elect their County and City officials. This year, there seems to be an unwary lar*e number of contested elections, a sign we regard as meat healthy.
We have heard from time to time, references to County offices as being Mr. Smith’s job, or Mr. Brown’s job or Mr. Jones’ job. We have even heard the absurd lament that, its a shame Mr. Jones is running for Mr. Smith’s job.

All public offices belong to the people, and it » the P®£P*® whoP at their pleasure, select their tanduktos to fill these jobs for a set limited time. A contested election is a normal, healthy democratic process.
At the end of every term, we would like to see each office holder compelled to go, hat in hand, to his electorate, seeking their approval. This can only be done by a contested
