Not only did the chestnuts afford healthy and wholesome recreation and food for country children, but they were quite a source of revenue. School books for large families were often bought with chestnuts, as well asi other items. Thousands of pounds were shipped from Rappahannock to city markets.
And then the terrible blight struck.
On high hills along the roads could be seen the great trees, shorn of their foliage, bark peeling off, their bare, scraggy limbs silhouetted against the sky. A sickening sight. The blight had done a complete job.
But let's get back to the Johnsons. “Believe it or not”, they have been gathering chestnuts, already 75Q, pounds of theijn from their blight-proof trees, |set out some years ago. They set put 100 trees, lost only one and they are hoping to enlarge their orchard.
The Johnsons have three varieties and more orders for the fresh sweet nuts than they can fill. The small chestnut is jthe most popular so they are doing a lot of grafting. Cuttings from the small variety are grafted to the trees bearing large nuts.
