tthe nation last week hog receipts were up two per cent from the previous week and eight per cent from the same week a year ago.
Slaughter for the last few weeks has been running above last year by about 15 per cent. And the next week or so we should reach top volume in slaughter.
In Richmond last week hogs were bringing from $14.50 to $15. Southeastern Virginia was lagging behind at $13.75 to $14.50. Chicago prices last week were $13.50 to $14.
TURKEYS
Watch for Beltsvilles to continue to strengthen a little in price in the next few weeks. Total supply is down about last year’s level now and indications are that it will continue to decrease the rest of 59.
By all means try to hit the December market with your heavy birds. It looks like slaughter will decrease for the heavies also during December and coupled with low storage holdings, Christmas market prospects look t better than Thanksgiving.
In Virginia last week the Beltsvilles were bringing mostly 21 cents to 23 cents. This was one to one and one half cents a pound higher than the previous week. The heavy type hen turkeys were bringing 24 cents and this was also a penny higher. Toms were bringing 22 cents a pound.
