Sales Tax
At a press .conference in Richmond Friday, Governor Almortd expressed the feeling that a sales tax for Virginia is definitely imperatve. He disclosed plans to ask the lawmakers' to enact a 3 percent sales tax at,the convening of the General Assembly as they began their sixty-day session yesterday.
Other major issues to come be’ fore the legislators is the strengthening of laws against drunk drivers and tightening billboard restrictions.
The Governor addressed a joint session of the House of Delegates and State Senate yesterday on the state of the Commonwealth.
We quote in part, “I extend to each and everyone of you not only the right hand of fellowship but my time and energy, and whatever assistance I may render in approaching a solution to any problem you -may have or which’ may arise at this session or thereafter. I invite you to confer with and to give me benefit of your helpful counsel and advice so that in mutual 'exchange of views we may combine and cooperate to better serve Virginia. I do not have the answers or the solutions to many of the problems which may confront us but working together we can and we must find and apply the right answers. Virginia demands this much but no less.,,
Governor Almond went on to discuss the budget needs for the many departments which operate under the governmentof the State.
