Presently there are five Rappar hannock cow herds enrolled in the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association’s record-of-performance testing program. Two of the herds were enrolled in 1954, two in 1956 and one in 1958. As of January 1960 these herds represented 384 cows and 19 bulls.
Since these herds were entered in the program 86 cows and 6 bulls have been culled because of poor records of performance. Because of superior performance records, 194 heifers have been retained as herd replacements.
In reply to a questionnaire* each member felt other feeder calf producers should enroll their herds. Increased costs in herd management, labor, etc. was indicated as being negligible. Other comments regarding the program: “Believe it pays and that is what we are after.Profit”; “Best tdol for selecting. best cows”; “My herd income trend has been obscured by other factors, my herd has just reached the desired number of head, except to do extensive culling in the next two years.”
