Forest Fires Increase

The Division of Forestry reports that 4 total of 394 fires burned 3,073 acres of forest land in the sixteen-county Northern Piedmont District in 1959. This represents a sharp increase, both in number of fires afid acreage burned,, over the yearibf 1958. In 1958, a total of 173 fires Turned a record low of 445 acres. As is usually the case, brush burning caused the largest numbeir of fires with 46 percent of the total coming from this cause. Smokers, the second largest, caused 22 pertent of the district fires this year. Other causes included railroads, hunters, lightning, lumbering- and incendiaries.
