The Board of Directors of the Virginia Restaurant Association today passed a resolution in connection with 'local-optioni voting for cocktails and highballs with meal service in restaurants and hoteb.
At its meeting in Richmond, the Association Board, noted that it would support legislation that would modify the present ABC laws to provide for the sale of alcoholic beverages in Virginia. It said:
“Such legislation woul bring about moderation in drinking here in Virginia which is now the 11th State in annual per capita consumption of alcohol. Such a law also would aid in bringing additional revenue to the State and counties; it would cut down the number of stilb in the State; aid in decreasing crime; be a tremendous aid in holding down drunkenness and be a financial aid to restaurants and hotels, suppliers of these places and a boon to many other facets of the economy here in Virginia.’
In addition, the Association’s Board said that “Virginia is the cradle of American democracy, and yet, to this day, Virginians have not been allowed to vote in their local areas on whether they desire the privilege of ordering a cocktail or highball with meal service.”
Last week the Virginia Hotel Association and the States Young Democratic organization both passed resolutions urging the General Assembly to pass a local-option drinking law.
