In Rappahannock County, 7 fires burned a total,of 38 acres at , forest land. The increase, both-*fr number of fires and acreage burned is attributed to a number of reasons. One of the principal reasons was die distribution of rainfall in the spring, which is generally the most dangerous period of the year. Although an average amount of rain fall was recorded during the spring, it was not well enough distributed to prevent high build-ups of fire danger over extended periods. The lack of sonw, and its padded effect on dead vegetation, plus it$ value to the soil in die storage of! water was also a contributing factor. High winds during critical periods, plus carelessness on the part of brush burners and smokers were the remaining principal causes.
