Crashes in which the vehicle has no contact with another vehicle fell from 380 to 349, to interrupt a steady rise through the years in this type of tragey.
Urban deaths were down from 163 to 122 while rural ones rose from 698 to 721. Deaths of servicemen fell from 71 to 59.
Observing that 1959 was the second consecutive year year im which deaths were reduced, Col. Woodson emphasized the fact that the reduction was slight and left no room for complacency. “Upwards of 845 unnecessary deaths can be nothing but a disheartening indictment of our society,” he concluded.
