Brush Burning Law
In Effect The Virinia Division of Forestry announces that the Virginia Brush Burning Law has become effective as pf March 1, and will stay in effect until May 15. This law covers all burning of brush, trash, leaves,; grass, debris or other inflammable material capable of spreading fire to woodland or brushland. The law states that it is unlawfu to start any open fire within 300 feet of woodland or brushland except between' the hours of 4 o’clock in the afternoon and 12 o'clock midnight. Approximately 40 percent of all forest fires start as a resut of out door burning. Since the most dant gerous time for forest fires occurs during the months of March, April and May,ithe law helps considerably in reducing the number of fires because burning during the most hazardous daylight hours is practically "eliminated.
Forestry personnel ask the cooperation of the public in all outdoor burning By burning during the legal houns, the danger of a fire escaping is not as great 35 earlier in the day. It is especialy important to stay with each fire until it is completely1 extinguished. Other precautions include a nearby supply of tools and water when burning, and additional help, especially where burning large pile* of trash and brush.
