It did not appear essential, though, for the taxpayers of the entire Nation to contribute more than $2 million to buy small park areas in the prosperous Virginia and Maryland suburbs of Washington, so this item was cut out of the budget. The committee managed to find other reductions to accomplish a total saving of nearly $7 million.
The House action on the Treasury-Post Office Appropriation bill produced cries of pain and anger from a member of the President's Cabinet.Postmaster General Summerfield. Mr. Summerfield said he was “shocked” and would have to “curtail service drastically” if the postal reduction were made to stick. In this instance, there was considerable floor debate in regard to the magnitude of the cut. Opponents of the reduction said Mr. S'ummerfield really would have to reduce postal service if more money were not provided. Supporters of the committee action said he should be able to gev^Non the amount provided but. if h# could prove he couldn’t. Congress certainly wouldn't let the postal service collapse and coud consider a suppementa] appropriation during the coming fiscal year.
