State Game and Inland Fisheries Commission Executive Director Chester Phelps today placed individual responsibility for “litterbugging” on the conscience of everyone using state highways and byways, trails and water courses, forest camps and remote hinterlands.
Phelps said that litterbugging increases every year despite the efforts, and some local accomplishments, of civic and service organizations, private citizens, and state and governmental agencies.
“While no one litters his own patio during a barbeque without later cleaning it up, many Virginians and other Americans are thoughtless to the point of feeling no individual or personal responsibility for the appearance of public areas,” he continued.“Thcy have no feeling of guilt when tossing trash along a road, stream, or in a nark or other recreational area.”
Phelps added that among the worst thorns in landholder-sportsmen relationships in this state is the shameful litter so often left behind fishermen, hunters, campers and picnickers.
