INDEPENDENCE
It’s the Fourth of July weekend, the time for picincs, parades and flowery editorials about Independence.
Americans really enjoy thinking of themselves as free and independent people, and I guess we are about as free as the interest on a 300 billion dollar debt will allow us to be. We’re free as long as the quarterly social security forms are filed, and minute daily records kept to show every’expense and item of income. And we’re free if exempt from the peace-time draft. W can work where we please at any job we’re suited for. with certain little limitations such as required union membership. Farmers are free to plant and grow what they want, providel their crops don’t fall within quotas We have free schools, run by the taxpayers, so long as they meet the approval of the U. S. Supreme Court and the 101st Airborne Division. We’re just loaded with Independence.
One read freedom we do have left though. We can say what we please, just as I’m doing now. And when you stop and think about it that’s a pretty valuable form of freedom, at that.
