Farmers Reminded

To Hold Contract

Rappahannock County farmers with land in the Conservation Reserve are reminded again of their continuing responsibility to refrain from grazing or harvesting a crop from any land in the reserve during the contract period.

“Although we are not authorized to take new land into the Conservation Reserve this fall,” ASC chairman H. S. Barksdale said, “there has been no change in the regulations concerning the use of land retired from production under C- R- contractts. A farmer is paid an annual rental for compliance with his contract and in most cases has already received payment for the cost of establishing a conservation practice on the land. The farmer in return is obligated to withhold the land from production for the life of the contract.”

There are 36 Conservation Reserve contracts in effect in Rappahannock County involving 1874.9 acres of crop land. Some of this land, planted in trees, will be held out of production through the 1969 crop season. There are 113.5 acres planted in trees under the Conservation Reserve contracts in the county.
