Brush Burning Law
In Effect Today
Chief Forest Warden Raymond M. Johnson of Rappahannock County' announced today that the brusih burning law is in effect beginning today Thursday, March 1. The law states that it is unlawful to burn brush, trash, or other inflammable material within 300 feet of inflammable material which leads to woodland, except between 4 o’clock in the afternoon and 12 o’clock midnight. This law is effective each year from Mardi 1 to May 15th.
During the spring months, warm weather, accompanied by high winds and low humidity, makes burning during daylight hours very hazardous. A fire is more likely to escape during the time of day when the temperature and wind is high than it *s late in the afternoon after the humidity rises and the wind is calm. The law will be strictly enforced in the county, and violators will be summoned to court. Detection of illegal burning will be carried out with the aid of forest fire lookout towers, airplane patrol, and law enforcement personnel of the Virginia Division of Forestry.
