Those having silt loam and sandy loam soils on first bottoms are growing com continuously as erosion is no problem and such soils frequently yield double the amount of corn per acre than from many of our upland soils. Those having deep upland soils that are well drained and yet have desirable water and fertility holding capacity are following a rotation of two years of corn and 2 to 3 years of Alfalfa using no small grain in the rotation.
Along with these practices has come reduced tillage costs and better yields through chemical weed control. This requires know-how. Knowledge of the type of applicator, knowledge of materials, timing, etc. More revolutionary than any of the above practice are the plow-plant methods of com production. Research indicates both the wheel-track method of planting and the tilled-strip method have places in Rappahannock’s Agriculture.
