There was one recent change in the social security law that, while minor, difectly or indirectly affects everybody under 72 receiving oldage or survivors insurance benefits. This was a change in the so-called “retirement test.”
Unden the old law, a person could earn $1200 and receive all of has monthly social security benefits. $1 in benefits was withheld, however, for each $2 he earned from $1200 to $1500, and $1 for each $1 iamed over $1500. Under the new law, only $1 is withheld for each $2 earne dfrom $1200 to $1700, with an additional dollar withheld for each dollar earned over $1700.
This means that under the new law a person eligible for social security benefits may earn up to $1700 and receive more in total earnings and benefits than under the old law. Of course, for each $1 earned over $1700, $1 is withheld in benefits. An important part of this change, too, is that it applies to earnings for this year. There is no change in the provision that, regardless of hoi^much a beneficiary earns in a year, he will get a benefit check for any month in which he is over 72, or in which he neither earns more than $100 in wages nor performs substantial service in self-employment.
