Steps are being taken to organize a Rappahannock County chapter of a fast growing national non-profit organization centering around the interests of older men and women, sometimes referred to as 'senior citizens'.
With headquarters in Wash* ington, the movement is spreading rapidly across the country, a recent report stating that applications for membership are lying receivedat a rate of 2,000 per day, the total now being^five hundred thousand. Growing out of an experiment on behalf of retired school teachers, the organization is known as American Association for Retired Persons (AARP for short), and is described as 'A non-profit educational, philanthropic scientific organization, serving men and women 55 years old and older, of the nation." The purpose is to provide mutual fellowship and unselfish services and to help work out solutions to the inevitable problems that come with advancing years. The practical activities thus far develped include an extensive drug service supervised by licensed pharmaists and supplying members with drugs, prescriptions and medical aids at greatly reduced prices. These include hearing devices. Vaporizers, electric blankets, heating pads, ice caps, etc. Complete catalogs are issued regularly and prompt service can be expected. All orders are sent prepaid. Direct arrangements with manufacturers, where purchases are made in large quantities, together with the preparation of products on standard formulas, make it possible to save members very substantially. At present 40,000 members are reported to be using the drug department. Another service feature is an insurance department specially designed to meet the needs of older people (65 and older). This includes hospitalization and out of hospital protection at favorable rates. A travel department is also Aft . Other services to members are being developed, to be announced as soon as ready for operation. As a cooperative non-profit organization, with much of the work done by volunteers, the cost of membership is a nominal $2 per year, which covers both man and wife and entitles both to full privileges of the drug
