Shooting Preserves

An exploding covey of quail, the whistle of mallard wings, the exciting cackle of a flushed pheasant—these are the thrills the 1962-63 season still holds for Old Dominion nimrods willing to dig into their eans for a few inflated greenbacks. This kind of shooting is available through March 31 on private game preserves scattered around the state. They enjoy a six months season.

The quail and mallards are the same popular species that during the regular season provide so much sport in our fields and along our jump shooting rivers. Hunted on private shooting preserves they provide equally as good sport and more of it.

The pheasant are the old Chinese ringnecks that have established themselves so firmly in our northern states. They will not reproduce in the wild in Virginia, but raised domestically and released they quickly revert to their natural wildness.

A fourth species popular on shooting preserves is the chukar partridge, an Asiatic import that holds tight for good bird dog work. Like the ringneck pheasant they will not reproduce in Virginia although they have been successfully introduced in arid areas in the West. A few preserves also offer wild turkey hunting.
