Why Rural Defense?
Everyone should realize this country, and the rest of the free world, is fighting Communism. In the fore ■ front we have the U. N. In second place, are our armed forces. Then we have Civil Defense. This latter group is composed of the governing bodies of our country, state, and county. Rural Defense organizations are composed of U. S. D. A. representatives on National state and county levels. They will be responsible formonotoring, receiving and distribution of foods, educating the public, etc. Throughout, pre attack and post attack planning and educating are essential. While I'm charged with the educational phase, I must state first WE ALL must first strive to develop awareness of the dangers, the possibilities, etc. One person can’t do all the educating. Our schools can’t reach all the people. Our paper, you as a neighbor, everyone; we must help each other. Somehow a lot of us feel there'll be no atomic war... this group could be right. Don't forget we are using atomic power. Atomic energy will be used more and more. We could have radio active fall out at any time without an enemy attack or any armed forces personnel goofing off anywhere in any country. Then the Cuban situation too is very real and right under our noses. For the present all I ask you to do is ask yourself these questions. Do I know how to live with fall - out? What about my neighbor who can't read? Do you know what foods, feeds, . etc. will be safe? Which growing foods are safest. What I do oar- illiterates 1cnow? For sure where will our armed forces be. . what will your status be? You are helping pay for: U. N. functions, for defenses, etc. What will any of this amount to if there aren’t people to produce food, no breeding stock, etc. etc. Yes. It is a very real challenge to each of us to know what we can do toward surviving in the event radioactive • fall out becomes a reality.
