“Poplar Shade", one of the oldest farms in Rappahannock County, which was owned by the late Robert Lee Miller, was sold at public auction recently to settle the estate. The farm was purchased by Col. V. John Lyle, U.S.A.F. who already owned adjoining land.
Poplar Shade,* which gets its name from the giant tulip poplar standing in the front yard, has been in the Miller family for four generations. It was first owned by Henry Miller who bought it in 1780 from Philip Gatewood, according to the deed recorded in Culpeper. (Rappahannock at that time was part of Culpeper County). It was part of the original grants made to James Kennerly and Philip Gatewood from Thomas Lord Fairfax. Henry Miller passed it to his son Jesse Miller. It was inherited by William Henry Miller, son of Jesse Miller, and pissed to his son Robert Lee I
