crease in many areas. Squirrel numbers are reported decidedly up in most Northern, Central Mountain, South west and Western Piedmont counties. In Eastern Piedmont &nd Tidewater counties squirrel numbers are generally equal to or better than population levels last year. Last year’s good acorn crop is cited as one of the reasons for the marked improvement. Quail populations as high or higher than last year are reported over most of the state. Decreases were reported from a few counties in the Northern, Central Mountain, and Eastern Piedmont sections, but these were more than offset by increases in other counties in the same sections.
The rabbit picture showed considerable improvement, especially in the Eastern Piedmont and Tidewater sections.
Grouse numbers were reported the same as last year or better over all of their range. The most optimistic reports came from the Central Mountain, Southwest and Western
