Historic Questions:
When the Historical Society for the County is organized on Dec. 14 at the Court House it will want the answers to many questions on the history of this area. In preparation for this meeting a few of these might be posed now. Perhaps everyone interested in our origins would like to know if there ever was an Indian village here, or a fort built to protect settlers against the Indians. Here is a suggested list of questions needing answers: 1 - Who knows for certain where some of the early Indian and pioneer trails were? 2 - How were the first roads determined, and did they follow the Indian trails? When and where were thefirst Stage Coaches used? Were toll roads the first roads? 3 - What was the very first industry in this area? 4 - Who built the first Tavern and where? The first mill, where? 5 - Was cotton and tobacco raised extensively here, and by whom? 6 - When and how did the apple industry develop? 7 - Why were mills and tanneries so numerous a hundred years ago? 8 - Who knows of any Revolutionary Soldiers burled in the County? 9 - Was there ever a battle of any kind fought here? 10 - Why were Coopers once so important in the area? 11 - What kind of tools were used in early industries including the tilling of the land, and are any of these now in existence? 12 - Does anyone know whether covered bridges exist ed in Rappahannock, and if so where were they? These and many other questions will be asked in the months ahead by those who will head up the various Committees proposed to do the research for the Historical Society. Every resident in the county can help in some way if they are interested in rediscovering the interesting facts about the people, places, and things which made up the early life of the community. Everyone who is interested in researching our county history, or has anything to offer toward the discovery of materials which will help in the work is invited to come to the Court House meeting on December 14. Thanksgiving Highway Deaths Set Record
The nation’s 554 traffic deaths during the extended Thanksgiving week end was a record high for the 102-hour
holiday period. /
The previous high was 543 last year.
The all-time traffic death toll for any 102-hour holiday period is 706 counted in Christ mas, 1956.
The atomic ship Savannah is the second vessel to bear that name. The first sailed from Savannah to England in 1819.
