Aware that it is facing an old enemy, the Department has devised a new strategy --that of showing what the war on litter is costing tax-paying citizens. A study has just been completed showing that expenses for picking up and disposing of trash are coming close to the half-million-dollar a year mark. “It’s a sum,” Deputy Commissioner John E. Harwood says, "that could be used for many worthy maintenance replacement or construction1 jobs.” In its own effort to draw public attention to the growing litter situation, the department has initiated production of 300 signs to be placed on tail gates of cleanup trucks. The signs will tell motorists what it costs them in tax money to clean up their areas.
