Spring Housecleaning
Up to your elbows in spring housecleaning? Here's how you can do a better job of washing the walls and cleaning furniture. Use of mild soap or commercial cleaner. Have one bucket for the cleaning solution, another for clean water for rinsing, and large sponges for both. Then wash your walls from the bottom up. This is the secret to success. If you start at the top, you may drip scrub water, down over the soiled area. This will cause streaks. But If you drip into a clean area, it can be easily wiped off. Wash only as much as you can reach. Then rinse immediately. In washing the next area, overlap the first one. Do the ceilings last. Treating furniture to dusting and a dab of polish is putting the cart before the horse. Dust ing and polishing will keep surfaces bright and attractive only if the wood itself is really clean. In order to achieve the highest luster and the truest color possible, wood should be washed before it is waxed. To brighten wood surfaces on chairs, tables, sofa legs, "desks -- even pianos — use thick “dry" suds made by beat ing a handful of soap or deter gent with very little water until a dense lather results. Pick up some of this lather with a cloth or sponge and use it to wash the wood, always working in the direction of the grain. Rinse-wipe with a damp cloth or sponge and dry with a clean cloth, completing one reachable area at a time. After all the dust and old polish are removed, the wood will look cleaner and more lustrous -- and will feel satinsmooth. When It Is completely dry, a new coat of polish or wax may be applied.
While washing, don't forget corners and “hidden" areas. ft fit g* ,wa Sh the basest the sides, and the; runner-shelves on which they rest — as well as the edges which show. A well-lathered bottle brush will help to wash out the corners. After rinsing let drawers dry thoroughly before re-lining them and replacing the contents. COUNTY NEWS
