Federal Road Funds
Virginia is among the nation's top ten states inputting current federal apportionments to work on road-building projects, the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads has reported. The Bureau said the Commonwealth ranks ninth among the states in obligating current interstate system funds, and ranks 10th in obligating funds provided in the federal aid primary, secondary and urban extension programs. Federal funds are obligated when plans are approved and the state is authorized to advertise for contracts on construction work, and when the state is authorized to proceed with surveys and designs or the acquisition of right-of-way, This means the state has the money earmarked for projects set for the immediate future, and it’s a significant gauge of the state’s highway progress.
