Recommended stages of maturity for harvesting as hay are Alfalfa- Harvest when 1/10 to 1/4 bloom except first cutting. The first cutting should be made after orchard grass heads, but before it blooms, since very little blooming normally occurs on Alfalfa by the time the firpt cutting is ready to harvest. For longevity of Alfalfa stand make last cutting 3-4 weeks before first killing frost (around Oct. 15th). Red Clover.... 1/2 to full bloom stage. Orchard grass....Cut in early head stage. Becomes woody quickly after blooming. Some say it is best to 6tart harvest as the head starts emerging from the boot.
