Summaries of forage tests show quite a difference in content of total digestible nutrients as well as digestible protein. In a manner this may be surprising to many livestockmen; on the other hand it could be the explanation of why one lot of cattle wintered primarily on corn silage did so much better than another lot fed corn silage at an identical rate. 1963-64 corn silage tests on all samples submitted to Va. Tech's laboratory averaged 28.6% dry matter; 19.5% total digestible nutrients and 1.2% digestable protein. The twenty-three samples submitted by Rappahannock farmers compared favorable: 30.8% dry matter, 20.76% TDN and 1.28% digestible protein. Spread in percent TDN on state level: high 40.4% to a low of 11.3%; on county level high 34.2% to a low of 11.4%. Obviously the cattleman whose silage was on the extreme low side would have to feed nearly four times more than the fnan with silage test ing 40.4% TDN if his cattle were to do as well.
