If your child is overweight, don’t wait for the situation to solve itself. Research shows this problem is rarely outgrown, and often becomes more difficult with age. Correcting the problem early with a balanced diet and good food habits is recommended by nutritionists in the U. S. Dept, of Agriculture. Genetics apparently plays an important role in the overweight problem. Recent research at Harvard University shows that 40 to 50 percent of the children were overweight when one parent was overweight, and when both parents were overweight, 80 percent of the children also were. Food habits, tastes, and preferences are learned early, and authorities agree it is a sound policy to help young children acquire the habit of eating balanced meals, not too calorie-loaded. Establishing good food habits, they remind, is simpler than breaking bad ones.
