42 Million Seedlings
For Sale at Cost
The Virginia Division of Fof estry has for sale this year 42,000,000 forest tree seedlings. These trees are raised and sold at cost to Virginia landowners for the purpose of reforesting abandoned agricultural land and cutover wood lands. In recent years, most of the seedlings have been planted on cutover woodlandsj like the gentleman above is | doing. It’s probable that most; of this years crop of seedlings are destined for the same purpose./ At recommended planting rates, 42 million seedlings will restock about 52,000 acres of Virginia woodlands with commercially-desirable trees. While® this may seem like a lot of land, it should be noted that about 250,000 acres are-cutover every year to supply Virginia’s sawmills and paper mills with raw material. Nature will restock some of those acres with merchantable tree species but many acres will be taken over by brush, honeysuckle or scrub trees. To keep up with the demands of native industry and to attract new industry to the state, fast-growing, commercially-desirable trees are being planted where nature has been stingy. Usually this means planting pine trees. Loblolly pine or white pine will grow about five times more wood in the same amount of time and space than will oak and many other hardwood trees. >9
