Low Fire Loss in
Spring of 1967
The Division of Forestry reports that 192 forest fires burned 576 acres of forest land in the 16-county Northern Piedmont District to date for this year. In Rappahannock County, 4 fires have burned 4.80 acres of forest land. Last year, the first five months Bhowed a total of 221 fires, and these fires burned 723 forested acres in the Northern Piedmont area. This year the fire danger was low on many days during the critical months of February, March, and May. A few critical burning days occurred during April. During . these months, a good supply of moisture kept tne torest fuel moist on many of the windy days. The Division of Forestry fire danger weather station, located in Charlottesville,recorded the following rainfall in the first four months of 1967: January 1.73 inches, February 2.19 inches, March 6.56 inches and April 0.86 inch. Although the rainfall in April was low, a fairly high amount of moisture in March helped to saturate the forest fuel so that it did not dry out right away.
