In spite of the cool weather which prevailed during the spring gobbler season, hunters apparently enjoyed another banner year with 552 turkey kill tags returned to the Came Commission so far and with many stations yet to report. Gobbling activity was severely curtailed in many parts of the state by the cool mornings which dominated the April 29 - May 13 season. Participation seems to be increasing in this sport which it is estimated provided over 25.000 man days of recreation during the past season. Dinwiddie County, a traditional leader in the spring turkey kill, took an early lead this season with 36 reported kills, although this leader may be dethroned by Bath or some of the other big-kill counties where returns are still incomplete. Thirty-two have been reported from Cumberland County, 31 from Wythe and 29 from Chesterfield so far. A reported total of 19 killed in Charles City County represents the greatest number of birds taken there in years. Turkey increases have been noted in several other eastern counties closed to fall shooting and open in the spring.
