The spring gobbler season which ended May 11, showed a marked increase in the kill in Rappahannock County as well as all Northern Virginia courv ties. Though the Rappahannock kill was modest compared to some counties, the six toms taken here represented a 50% increase over last year. John J. Silvey, Jr., Dickey Latham and David Eiseman, all from the Amissville area, scored during the three week, daylight to 10 a.m. season. Also taking turkeys in Rappahannock County were H. C. Lehew and Wray Windle of Front Royal and Carlton Spicer from Ruckersville. This increase in turkeys taken was done so with no noticable increase in hunting pres sure in the county. Though the kill may be too low to be significant, hopefully it indicates an increase in the overall population.
The Fall turkey season will remain closed in Rappahannock and Madison counties. For the patient trout fisherman, Thornton River’s North Fork and Piney Branch should still provide some good sport. After a heavy assault on 1500 newly stocked Brooksand Rain bows on Saturday morning the fishing has dropped off sharply.
