Troops Activities
There has been muchactivlty among the members of Girl Scout Troop 380 and Cadette Troop 393 In Rappahannock County. Nine girls were promoted from Scouts to Cadettes at their regular meeting Thursday, May 16 and received new Cadette Handbooks. They are under the leadership of Mrs. Charles Swaim of Flint Hill. The charter members of the Cadette Troop gave a tea Friday at the Fpiscopal Parish Hall and successfully earned Challenge pins for Social Dependability. They have worked a year for this honor going through all phases of proper manners and correct social behavior. The tea was attended by invited guests and mothers of the Cadettes. Thursday was the last meeting of both groups before a weekend of camping at Roundabout Farm near Sperryville in June. Mrs. Frances Thornton, County Health Department Nurse, gave the girls a demon stratlon in basic first aid. On Saturday a group of 35 girls, leaders and mothers took a five and a half mile hike, in spite of showers, to the top of Red Oak Mountain. They were met by Forest Warden Raymond Johnson who gave a talk on Virginia Forests and showed them how trees start from tiny seeds or cones. 1 veryone enjoyed the tremendous view of Rappahannock County and surrounding area which can be seen from this vantage point. Three Scouts, Mary Moore Kilby of Sperryville, Susan Latham and Jeannie St. Clair of Amlssville, were awarded the Sign of the Star beforeleaving the mountain top. This signified completion of junior scouting requirements. These three girls were among the nine promoted to Cadettes.
