Back in 1956, when the project was started, it was believed that the work could be done for $673,000 per mile. Today, the cost is nearly double that amount. Asa result, points out Lowell K. Bridwell, Federal Highway Administrator, the trust fund, which is on a pay-as-you-go basis, is not receiving enough revenue to maintain its schedule.

Consequently, it now appears that completion cannot be before 1975, instead of 1972. With seven more years to go, Rappahannock County car owners can expect to pay at least $428,000 more into the fund, based upon the number of cars now in operation locally.
