George William Alther will issume the position of jailer for ;he Rappahannock County jail on Saturday, February 1. He moved ;his week with his family from Sperryville to the living quarters it the jail. He was formerly ;m ployed with the Virginia [Department of Highways. Mr. Alther fills the position left racant with the resignation of Srnest Li Hard who has served in ;his capacity since February 1963. Mr. and Mrs. Lillard and 'amily have moved in the Rees louse in the Town of Washington.

The Division of Forestry ■eports that 548 forest fires lurned 1303 acres of forest land n the 16-county Northern Jiedmont District during 1968. In Ftappahannock County, 6 fires lave burned 2.9 acres of forest and. During 1967 there was a ;otal of 274 fires, and these fires lumed 806 forested acres in the Slorthern Piedmont area. During 1968 the fire danger vas low in January, but severe ;onditions developed during February and lingered on through nuch of March and April. During ;hese months, forest wardens and /olunteer fire departments were ible to keep the average size of ;he fire relatively small, even ;hough fires were numerous. A ieficiency of rainfall was noted in ill four months amounting to more than half the normal imount. A high percentage of District firqs was due to brush and trash burning. Another major cause was smoking; and children playing with matches accounted for < large number of fires. Railroads are responsible for about 2C percent, as burning carbon, hoi metal from brakes, and burning fusees cause fires on the railroac rights-of-way which often burr into the forests.
As we again approach that timr of year when forest fires occui more frequently we ask for youi help. Remember, a few dry days warm temperatures, a little wind and materials which normally burn rapidly can cause you anc the forest fire fighter serious trouble. Good judgment is necessary when burning at any time.
