Starlings Costly
Several Ways
Flocks of starlings dining at feeding stations set up by poultry range operators and feedlot operators can be costly in several ways.
It has been estimated that a thousand starlings can eat about 65 pounds of feed a day, said Glenn R. Dudderar, Extension wildlife specialist at Virginia Tech.
More important, perhaps, is the fact that these birds are disease carriers. It has been proven that starlings carry hog cholera from one hog producing area to another. They are also suspected of carrying such diseases as shipping fever, red nose, blue comb and fowl cholera.
Virginia livestock producers can receive help from three sources in controlling starlings, Dudderar said. These are the Cooperative Extension Service at Virginia Tech; the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce; and the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, Division of Wildlife Services, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va.
Two control tools-sodium fluoride and a toxicant marketed as Starlicide--are used in Virginia. They are mixed with a bait and placed out for the starlings.
Most important, though, is not the type of toxicant, but how it isj presented, said the specialist. Any bait must be presented where the birds will accept it and in a form identical to what they are already eating and at a time when they will accept it.
