The trend to hybrid cabbage has come about rather rapidly in the past few years. Several outstanding hybrids are available. For your information and use, I have compiled notes from my trials at Blacksburg and commercial fields, and will summarize these results below.
Varieties - of the many available, I would suggest at least four. These are:
Little Rock - 82 days, a short cored variety, having medium blue-green color, outstanding holding ability, and excellent uniformity. It is yellows resistant, free of black speck, resistant to bacterial spot and has good cold resistance. Heads firm up at 2Vi to 3 lbs. and hold well without splitting. Source - Ferry Morse.
Market Prize - 76 days, very uniform, heads firm at 2V: - 3 lbs. Deep blue-green color, widely adapted, has produced satisfactorily in yellows infested soil. Becoming well known by plant growers and produce buyers. Source: Joseph Harris.
Market Topper - 73 days, a uniform hybrid having medium blue-green color, solid heads, good shipping qualities, yellows resistance, and will hold marketable size for sometime without bursting. Core length is moderately long.
Rio Verde - I have very little information on this variety, except from observations in variety plantings where it looked very - gootJv - similar to Market Topper with regards to color, uniformity, and vigor, maturity, holding characteristics, and firmness. Core length is medium.
