Speaking of roads, several years 1 ago the railroads improved their 1 roadbeds by lowering their steep inclines and raising lower levels to avoid sharp dips. They laid “high iron” rails to increase their safe speed potential. They also eliminated the curves that were too acute. I don’t know what would constitute an acute curve in railroad terminology, but I saw an acute curve the other day. Vital statistics about thirty-four, twenty-two. --Oh oh, I’m supposed to be thinking about roads.
Some young lovers came out to see us some time ago and remarked on the romantic nature of our road. I agree the road has its beauty, but it is not my idea of romance to meet someone on a curve and have to back up around a huge rock. Crushed fenders - well, I’m not much of a “cusser” but I think some mean thoughts at times.
I tried to work out a little poem about our road. Here it is.
There’s a road I like to follow
Far outside the town,
O’er the ridge and down the hollow,
Winding up and down.
A little road, just a byway,
And any time I roam
This little road I call MY WAY
Always leads me home.
A Texas survey revealed that 68 percent of those killed in single car crashes, 43 percent of those killed in two-car ones and 58 percent of the pedestrians killed were “drunk when they died”.
