Speed, alcohol and darkness were heavily present in the 12 fatal traffic crashes which killed 16 people in Virginia during the Memorial Day holiday last year, said John T. Hanna, Director of the Virginia Highway Safety Division, today. Nine of the crashes involved excessive speed and seven drinking drivers, he reported. Noting that the mileage death rate at night is about three times higher than that of daylight, he reported further that nine of the crashes occurred in hours of darkness.
“The holiday this year,” he said, “ will be a three-day one, since Memorial Day will be observed on Monday. Last year it was two-days with Memorial Day falling on Saturday. This means more cars will be on the road and they will be driven more miles than normally.” The safety official’s advice was to start both legs of the holiday trip early so there will be less temptation to speed and take chances, start back early and avoid night driving as far as possible and refrain from driving when sleepy, exhausted or drinking.
In asking also for defensive driving, he continued in saying, “Look for trouble. You can meet a tired, drinking or speeding driver who can kill or maim you through absolutely no fault of your own.”
