What have Rappahannock County residents been doing lately about their cigarette smoking? To what extent have the campaigns conducted by the Public Health Service and others led them to cut down on their consumption or cut it out completely? The findings are that many of them have quit permanently and many others are trying to do so. As for the large remainder, however, they are smoking as much as ever. That is the trend in most areas. The Department of Agriculture reports that 1970 was the first year in four in which there was a rise in per capita consumption of cigarettes by adult smokers in the United States. The average was up nearly two packs annually. According to a survey made by the National Center for Health Statistics, the ones who are cutting down on their cigarettes are the light smokers--those who use no more than 10 per day-and elderly people. There was a marked increase, however, on the part of those who smoke one or more packs a day. In Rappahannock County, in the past year, cigarette sales came to approximately 646,000 packs,
