programs now include provisions for adjustments related to cost-ofliving increases, the inevitable lag in the reaction of these formulas often create real financial problems for retired persons who do not have reserves to cushion the shock of rapid rises in prices for essential goods and services,” Robinson said. “The fixed income group, which includes the great majority of retired citizens, suffers most from unchecked inflation and has the greatest stake in the current efforts to stabilize our economy,” he added. Robinson noted that a Congressional subcommittee on which he serves will be taking up problems of aging in the coming weeks. “There are a number of federal programs which have been established for the benefit of citizens of advancing years; but some of Item seem tp^have become ensnaried in redtape, with the result that the intended beneficiaries often have difficulty coping with the paperwork,” he commented.
He explained that the Special Studies Subcommittee of the House Government Operations Committee would be evaluating the performance of federal programs in housing and health care for the elderly and studying their particular transportation and insurance problems.
“In general, we will not have in mind new federal program::, because they would not be within the jurisdiction of this inquiry subcommittee, but, rather, determining how existing programs can be made to deliver full value for the tax dollar invested in them,” Robinson said.
