served witn uen. Noce four years in World War II, about two and a half years in England, North Africa, Italy and southern France. So, I know him well. We had about 250 volunteers to serve with Gen. Noce from the Mississippi valley.

In the early days of the war, he commanded the Amphibian Engineers during the organizational period. This was a priority organization and the selection of soldiers and officers was handled very carefully. I recall an order of General Noce that all officer candidates be carefully screened and personal interviews were required of references — the final question being “would you be willing for your son to serve under this man as an officer in combat?” You would be surprised how many this question eliminated. I wonder how Carter would score? ^
