WITH THE return of more than one million children to Virginia’s schools this fall, motorists are urged to exercise the utmost caution when approaching school buses and when in the vicinity of schools.
John T. Hanna, director of the Highway Safety Division of Virginia, said, “Last year two school children were killed getting on and off school buses. These tragic deaths could be prevented if all motorists observed the law and took extra precaution when approachirtg a halted school bus.”
On a rural highway or city street divided by a physical barrier or unpaved section, motorists are not required to stop if the bus is on the opposite side, according to the officials.
